Integrated Sports Complex, proposed in Vizag city, hits another roadblock as the land earmarked for the project has been canceled. The administration would identify alternative land chunks for the project now. The project land has made way for the government’s housing scheme for the poor. About five years ago, the Andhra Pradesh government had proposed to set up the state of art stadium (integrated sports complex) in over 150 acres of land in Vizag city similar to the Gachibowli stadium in Hyderabad city of Telangana to promote sports and produce talented sportspersons from the region.
A year ago, the Vizag district administration had allotted around 80 acres of land to Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) for the major project (integrated sports complex) at Aganampudi area in Vizag city. While the SAAP was waiting for the allotment of the remaining 75 acres of land for the project, the AP government has canceled the allotment of 80 acres of land. Recently, the 80 acres of land allotted for the sports project at Aganampudi were canceled and the land was allotted for the house-sites for the poor. Similarly, the government is also assured to allocate another parcel of land required for the project to the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh in the city.
Speaking to Hello Vizag MV Manikyalu, Olympian and Secretary of District Olympic Association said though politicians said that Vizag city will be developed into an international sports hub, the government is yet to come up with any proposals for creating sports infrastructure in the city. The brand image of Vizag and Andhra Pradesh has been dented in the sports sector as we don’t have sports icons and stadiums post bifurcation of the state. In the past, many governments failed to sports infrastructure and develop stadiums, he added.
