City based artist Swarna Latha Kannepalli, in an interview with Hello Vizag, shares her journey. A Post- Graduate in Mathematics (from St Joseph’s College for women) and presently working as a Mathematics Teacher in the Presidential School, Swarna is a teacher by profession and artist by passion.

1. What was the beginning point of your creative journey?

I am a self-taught cartoon illustrator and I started illustrations from 2017. I used to sketch on paper initially and then later started using technology available for digital sketching. I haven’t gone through any tutorials or anything, but it all started with my mobile in which there is already one digital sketch app inbuilt. The name of my Art page is Swashdiaries – ‘Swash’ meaning flow of water (I wanted my thoughts to be like that). My work was getting recognised gradually and I started exhibiting my arts in Andhra University grounds, Gitam Deemed to be University as a part of Artist Gallery. I also conduct workshops for children.

2. What kind of art do you specialise in?

As a cartoon illustrator, most of my works are about me and my life situations and I illustrate them with my selected theme colour pink. Coming to illustration part, I also do customized illustrations and illustrations on request.

3. What is the message that you usually give through art?

Generally, most of art illustrations are funny, sarcastic. At the same time depending on the situations, I try to illustrate with a message. The themes vary from occasion to occasion and event to event.

4. How do you think art can be a medium to spread awareness?

According to me, art is the main medium to spread awareness and cartoons play a main role in it. They attract each and every one, irrespective of their age, gender, etc. When it is illustrated with dialogues, they create more curiosity.

5. Please explain a few of your works.

At the beginning, my illustrations were on life situations. Then I started to illustrate about Indian festivals, our culture, our national leaders, importance of farmers, movie and web series illustrations, etc. Slowly. I started illustrating about Vizag, illustrated wedding cards, inktober posts, accepting social media challenges, 90s nostalgia posts and so on. Until now, I have illustrated 500+ arts.
