Chicken and poultry prices have skyrocketed in Visakhapatnam due to a decrease in supply, especially in summer. As on Monday, the chicken prices have touched sky-high Rs. 270 kg, while the online or mall prices touched Rs 320 per kg. The sudden rise in chicken and poultry prices have taken Vizagites by surprise. Many people favour chicken, a healthy substitute for mutton, which is over Rs. 800 to Rs. 850 per kg, vendors said. Due to the sudden rise in prices, there is very less demand, vendors lament.
A meat supplier at Dondaparthy, Ramu, pointed out that the swift rise in prices led to poor sales over the weekend. “I sit in my shop for more than 10 hours and only a few come to buy chicken. I have lost most of my clientele,” he bemoaned. Moreover, “Online aggregators, who deliver chicken home by guaranteeing a discount, have taken most of my sales away.” He said boneless chicken cost Rs. 300 per kg, while online companies and malls sell the same at Rs. 350 to Rs. 360 per kg. He expects that the prices may go over Rs. 300 next week.
Another met supplier from Ram Nagar explained due to the soaring heat, many chickens die and the production is quite less. This is one of the reasons for the price rise. “With corona cases increasing again, many poultry farmers are trying to sell off as many birds as possible,” he said.
“This year, we don’t want to take a chance as it has been cleared that virus is no longer linked to chicken consumption.”
