The department of post, Visakhapatnam released a special cover on Desabandhavi Duvvuri Subbamma, the first women freedom fighter from AP on Wednesday. The cover was released by Chief Postmaster General Manager Venkateswarlu. The cover gives a dekko into Subbamma’s life story in English and Hindi languages.
Subbamma was born into an orthodox family on Mrch15, 1880 in Draksharamam in the East Godavari district and was married at 10. After her husband’s death, she joined the Quit India Movement against the British Raj. A devoted Gandhian, Subbamma travelled across the State exhorting women to wear khadi and worked for women empowerment and abolish untouchability.
She was incarcerated in Rajahmundry prison and in Rayavellore prison for taking part in the civil disobedience movement and Salt Satyagraha. Affectionately called Desabandhavi by the people, she began a school for women called ‘Sanatana Streevidyalaya’ at Rajamahendravaram in which admission was reserved only for widows.
