Visakhapatnam Steel Plant privatization issue seems to have thrown a mixed bag of results in the GVMC’s Gajuwaka zone where the plant is located. Besides the civic issues, steel plant privatization had taken the centre stage during the campaigning for civic body polls with all the major political parties indulging in mud-slinging blaming each other for the privatization. As the steel plant is located in Gajuwaka, the privatization issue seems to have largely impacted the voters in Gajuwaka and Pendurthi zones of the GVMC limits.
People depending on the steel plant would have decided to cast their votes on the issue. And, when the results were announced on Sunday, of the 20 wards in Gajuwaka, YSRCP bagged 9 wards, TDP 8, Jana Sena, CPI and CPM one each. In Pendurthi, TDP won seven out of 10 wards. While the TDP accused YSRCP of making a shady deal with the private steel giants for monetary and real estate benefits, the latter proved its determination by waging a battle against the privatization move.
Extending solidarity with the protestors, YSRCP also conducted a padayatra from the GVMC office to the steel plant gate ahead of the ULB elections. Political analysts were of the view that the steel plant issue could give an edge to the TDP as the protestors could go against the ruling parties in the Centre and State. However, the results show that the voters were apparently divided while casting their votes in the ULBs. In the larger view, the steel plant issue has failed to impact the winning chances of the ruling YSRC party.
