With the lockdown seeming like it’s never going to end, now is the perfect time to start learning a new skill. Learning a language is fun, makes you smarter, and will give you a different way of saying, “I’m hungry!” Here are some ways which help ease the process of learning an entirely different language.
Learn new words everyday
Vocabulary is extremely important in any language, even if it’s basic. Start with learning words that you use every day and perfecting the pronunciation as much as you can.
Learn common sentences and use them
Learn phrases like “I’m eating.”, “I am very happy/sad.”, “I have nothing to do.”, or “Do you want some?”. This will help you inculcate and ingrain the language in your mind.
Maintain a diary
Writing in a diary at the end of the day in this new language will help you in understanding the usage of certain words. You will also know the words that you didn’t actually learn and work accordingly.
Talk to other speakers
You might think that talking to actual speakers of the language might be difficult, but this is actually proven to be the best way to become fluent in a language. The more you talk to other people, the more you catch onto word usages and pronunciation.
Teach someone else the language
Teaching someone the basics of a language in the same way that you learnt them, helps you revise and perfects your pronunciation in the process. It’s a great way to get another person to start speaking it as well, so you get a partner for conversation too.
Listen to music or watch movies in that language
Watch and listen to them with subtitle translations, so you know how the language sounds in a casual conversation. When we learn a language, we usually learn it according to certain rules, but they often don’t apply to spoken language.
Understand the intonations
The most important thing to be truly fluent in a language is to understand the stress patterns and the intonation in sentences. Should the pitch go up or down in a question or a statement? These are questions that you should be able to answer when you learn pronunciation.
Read up a bit about the language family to which the particular language belongs, and it’s sister languages. There are usually a lot of similarities between the scripts and the words of related languages. That’s why it’s easier to learn Spanish if you already know French. This is also why English speakers can learn German with ease. There are a lot of applications that help in language learning, like Duolingo, Babbel, etc.
