With the surge in covid-19 positive cases in North Coastal Andhra day after day, the people of Vizag expressing concerns over the unavailability of the Remdesivir antiviral injections in the city. According to the public with whom Hello Vizag spoke to said few pharmacies are hoarding the injection and selling it at an inflated price of Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000. This antiviral prescription drug is mostly used for moderately severe hospitalized Covid-19 cases and a patient usually requires six vials.
Due to this, Vigilance and Enforcement sleuths on Monday busted racket selling Remedisivir injections in the black market. They also arrested a nurse and two housekeeping staff of a private nursing home here. On a tip-off, the vigilance personal visited the nursing home. When they approached outsourcing staff for six Remdesivir injections the staff allegedly demanded Rs. 10,000 for each injection. According to additional SP G Swaroopa Rani, the Remdesivir injections were being diverted using prescriptions given to patients.
Speaking to Hello Vizag on condition of anonymity, a student of Andhra Medical College said that he came to know that Remdesivir stock is inadequate at many private hospitals and pharmacies. But stocks are there in KGH and Chest Hospital and administered free of cost. But in the outside market, depending on the brand, each vial is supposed to be priced between Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000. Stating further, he said according to his known sources, these anti-viral injections were being sold illegally at exorbitant prices like Rs 15,000 or Rs 20,000 at some smaller drug stores.”
