There has been n in the ongoing agitation against the privatization of the Vizag Steel Plant. Visakha Ukku Parirakshana Porata Committee (VUPPC), which is spearheading the protest, is gearing up for karmika garjana on March 20, and exert more pressure on the centre. Committee members comprising convener Ayodhya Ram, P Simhachalam, Pydiraju and K Srinivas are camping in Delhi to meet MPs to seek their support for their strike.
Speaking to Hello Vizag from Delhi, Ayodhya Ram said a high-level delegation of the committee accompanied by YSRC leader and MP V Vijayasai Reddy will meet floor leaders of various political parties in Delhi on Monday. He said they met MPs from the state and other national trade union representatives in the last two days to seek their support against the PSUs privatization.
VUPPPC leaders also said they were receiving good support for Karmika garjana being planned at Trishna Grounds, where national trade union leaders will address the gathering. They added, “The Karmika garjana will be the first step to transform the ukku agitation into a national-level protest. If we exhaust all our options and still didn’t get our desired result, then we would go an indefinite strike.”
Taking exception to the reported statement of Kishan Reddy that “the steel plant has been in losses for several years and for how long taxpayers money will be spent on it”, VUPPC chairman Ch Narasing Rao demanded that Union Minister of State G Kishan Reddy should withdraw his remarks on the steel plant issue because it is totally false. He said the VSP has till now paid Rs. 46,000 crore in the form of taxes and dividends to the union government.
