Vijay Devarakonda: A Rebel, A Rowdy, A Trendsetter


He was tagged as Emraan Hashmi of Tollywood after the release of his movie teaser Dear Comrade. A man who went on to establish himself as a superstar, he became the heartthrob of the nation overnight. His performance in Arjun Reddy is ranked among the 100 greatest performances of the decade by Film companion. He was slammed by the actress Parvathy for his character in the movie Arjun Reddy. Many found his character in the movie problematic but he didn’t mind it and his movie Dear Comrade proved him as a man of non-toxic masculinity. He was trolled along with his Dear Comrade movie co-star Rashmika Mandana for a kissing scene.

He said clearly in a press interview that he is a revengeful man and if the audience hates any of his movies then he takes it as a challenge and tries to prove his acting prowess in the next film. He calls himself rowdy as it is the term given by his family to him because every time he did something that was not approved by them, so he started calling him that.

This man proves the statement “A star is not born, he is made”. He was born to Govardhana Rao and Madhavi Deverakonda. His father was from an acting background as he has been a television actor. His younger brother is also a film actor. He started his journey with films that were decently successful but failed to give him recognition. The movies Nuvvila in 2011 and Life is Beautiful respectively. Then he was cast in the critically acclaimed movie Yevade Subramanyam alongside actor Nani. The film went on to be critically and commercially successful and he won praise for his diction, energy, and the role in the movie. This was the movie that gave him recognition but still, the profile of a superstar is yet to be achieved.

Then he was cast as a lead-in the movie Pelli Choopulu, which won best feature film in Telugu at the 64th National Film Awards as well as the Filmfare Award Best Film Telugu. He was praised for his realistic way of portraying the character of a lazy and unmotivated chief. He was then seen in the movie Arjun Reddy directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, this was the movie that catapulted him to fame overnight and he became the heartthrob of many. Although the movie had some complications it went on to become commercially successful and won many accolades. He was awarded Filmfare Award for Best Actor Telugu.

He is real life rebel too, this was proved during one of his interactions with a live audience where he asked his fans to shout out loud all those cusswords which were censored by the censor board. According to him, the language was in sync with the plot, and in real life, such kind of people do use such lingo. He was then seen in the film biographical period drama film Mahanati which is in itself a definition of marvelous filmmaking. His character as a charismatic and easy-going photographer stole many hearts. Then he was seen in Geetha Govindam, Dear Comrade where his performance was appreciated. He is a do-gooder by heart and does justification with the character.

Apart from being a talented and fantastic actor, he is a man with a kind heart as he donated Rs. 13 crores for the Covid-19 relief fund. He is a rowdy, a rebel, a do-gooder, a stupendous entertainer, and a true human being. He is a true original in the era of duplicates and stereotypes, you can love, you can hate him, but you cannot ignore him!.
