Visakhapatnam has been declared the ninth cleanest city in the country in the Fifth Annual Swachha Survekshan Cleanliness Survey 2020, in the category of cities with a population of over 10 lakhs. Visakhapatnam is the second city in Andhra Pradesh to figure in the Top 10 cities after Vijayawada, which has secured fourth place. Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has announced the rankings on Thursday. Compared to last year’s ranking of 23, a Vizag raised the bar of improvement significantly to 9th place this time.
Vijayawada Municipal Corporation also bagged the award ‘India’s Cleanest Big City’, while Tirupati was awarded the title ‘Best Self Sustainable Small City’. In the national ranking of 382 cities with a population between 1 lakh and 10 lakhs, Tirupati bagged sixth place with 5,142.76 points.
Among the special awards, Chirala was adjudged best sustainable small city (50,000 to 1 lakh population), Atmakur (Nellore) was named best sustainable small city (25,000 to 50,000 population). Palamaneru achieved the award for South Zone cleanest city (50,000 to 1 lakh population), while Mummidivaram achieved the award for the smallest fast-moving city (below 25,000 population).
Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that the survey continues to help us in sustaining the gains made under Swachh Bharat Mission while providing a comprehensive road to institutionalize the concept of Swachhata among all our cities
