Continuing the traditions of Swachhta awards for the city of Vizag which were earlier bagged by GVMC, Railway Station (cleanest railway station in the country),now the Vizag Customs has been awarded the first place in the Swachhta rankings in the country amongst all the Customs formations. The awards were announced by the Chairman, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs.
The rankings took into consideration the social behavioral impact of the project, initiative value in comparison to the resources w.r.t the project and most importantly scalability i.e., degree to which the project can be replicated or scaled up. Other parameters are sustainability weightage and participation weightage i.e., scope of people participation in the project. Vizag Customs House has installed a Compost machin at its residential quarters which turns the waste material i.e., garbage collected into nutrient rich soil and also helps in generation of funds in return by selling the generating organic fertilizer. Another project that was taken up was the sewage
This plant installed at the Custom House, Visakhapatnam treats the sewage water and converts into fresh water. This reduces the water consumption considerably and also reduces the cost incurred for buying fresh water. Both these projects were inaugurated in the last financial year by the Chief Commissioner of Vizag zone, Shri Naresh Penumaka, in the presence of Pr. Commissioner of Customs Vizag, Shri D. K. Srinivas.
