The district administration has de-notified government ENT hospital and 46 private and corporate hospitals which have been listed as Covid-19 hospital following a drop in the number of positive cases being reported every day.
On Thursday, the district reported 502 cases and seven deaths. The number of active cases stood at 6,910 while it was 9,750 five days ago. Speaking to Hello Vizag, Officer on Special Duty and principal of Andhra Medical College Dr PV Sudhakar said “All the major and important hospitals have reported that the occupancy fell by 50 per cent and it would continue to fall as the situation is improving.”
He said out of the 500 beds in the CSR block of King George Hospital, only 250 beds have been occupied as on date. Other hospital having a strength of 400, has 188 patients, Government Hospital for Chest and Communicable Diseases has 120 patients with a strength of 200 beds.
Similarly, the two major Covid Care Centres in Visakhapatnam have reported no new admissions. Around 900 patients were admitted in Mudasarlova Covid Care Centre during the first week of May and on Thursday it came down to 88. The other major centre in Bakkannapalem has been closed.
“We are slowly closing down all the Covid Care Centres in Visakhapatnam but will get prepared for the possible third wave. These centres would be useful for children,” said Covid Care Centres chief Medical Officer Dr Malladi Srinivas Sharma.
Health experts feared that due to the easing of the lockdown and curfew, there could be a fresh surge in new cases. They said ensuing monsoons could do away with the social distancing when large groups of people take shelters in the rain.
