Vizag District records 235 new cases, highest in six months, says DM & HO

There is no let-up in Covid-19 cases as more than 150 cases were recorded on an average in the last six days in the district. On Sunday as many as 235 new cases, the highest in six months, were recorded. There are 1,681 active cases against 1,542 cases on Saturday. Till now a total of 60880 people were discharged, while 95 were discharged on Sunday. One more person died, taking the total deaths to 550. The rising cases have been causing concern among officials who stepped up surveillance in the district.

Speaking to Hello Vizag, District Medical and Health Officer (DM & HO) PS Suryanarayana said most of the infections were contact cases of positive cases reported earlier. He said there were 60 persons infected by Covid-19 in the KGH CSR block and 90 percent of people are in home isolation. He said the cases reported on Sunday were from Madhurawada, Arilova, Pendurthi, Simhachalam and Gajuwaka.

On average, they were administering Covid-19 vaccination to 20,000 people daily. He said 80 percent of those who have taken vaccines in the first phase have taken the second dose. He said Andhra University Engineering College students are stale and the ovid-19 confirmation test will be done for them on Tuesday. He said the third sero-surveillance will start soon in the district. As many as 6,000 people both vaccinated and non-vaccinated, will be covered. He said the surveillance was a two-year plan as serum tests will be done on the same people every six months. The samples with barcodes will be sent to the Chennai lab. He said first sero surveillance has found that 28 percent of people in the district have developed antibodies. He said the results of the second sero surveillance are yet to come.
