After being adjudged as a ninth place in the garbage-free city in the latest Swachh Survekshan (SS) Rankings 2020 in India, Visakhapatnam has been shortlisted for Prime Minister’s Award for promoting public participation among four Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the country for people’s participation in Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). Visakhapatnam is one and only district from the Southern states, which is competing for the PM Award.
Visakhapatnam along with other urban local bodies of Yelamanchili and Narsipatnam will be considered a cluster, will be judged on the comprehensive progress achieved in Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) by promoting people’s movement through Janbhagidhari (Public participation). The award will be judged on the performance metrics like personal hygiene, cleanliness at commercial places, open places and residential places, segregation of garbage and waste management, services carried out by the ULBs, awareness about programs, delivery mechanisms and people’s participation, community toilets and other issues of SBM will also be contemplated. As a part of this initiative, District Collector V Vinay Chand explained in detail over a Power-Point presentation to the Prime Minister’s Office online about the progress of ULBs made in the Swachha Bharat Mission.
Additional Commissioner of GVMC B Sanyasi Rao said an inspection of the city will be made through zoom on Saturday to evaluate the implementation of SBM parameters. Lauding the people’s participation and their response through Twitter, Facebook, and other social media, he said Visakhapatnam is leading for the top spot. Not only that, Visakhapatnam is the first city in the state to have user-friendly toilets but also at the forefront of plastic waste management, waste power generation. The results of the virtual inspection will be announced by the month-end he added.
The other contender districts which are vying for the Prime Minister’s Award are Durg, Raigarh, Surguja, and Rajnandgaon district from Chhattisgarh Surat, Ahmedabad, Rajkot from Gujarat, Indore district from Madhya Pradesh, and Dhule district in Maharashtra.
