RINL-Visakhapatnam Steel Plant commissioned its new Coke Oven Battery (COB:5) on Tuesday. The first coke was pushed down by CMD PK Rath, in the presence of Atul Bhatt, CMD of MECON. The COB#5 project was envisaged with a total cost of about Rs. 2,500 crore. While M/s MECON is the principal consultant for the project, M/s BEC consortium and M/s TATA Projects Limited are the principal contractors.
With the unrelenting efforts of Vizag Steel along with its project division at the forefront, the battery could be first-charged with coal on December 21 and all the 67 ovens were charged within 24 hrs which is a unique achievement. The first pushing was completed on December 22 marking the commissioning of COB#5, a momentous event for Vizag Steel. All directors and senior officers of RINL and MECON, trade Union leaders, and employees were present.
