The State Government has unveiled a plan to improve public transport by developing a Metro and tram corridor in Vizag at a cost of Rs 20,000 crore. The city will soon be officially designated the Executive Capital of the State. The Detailed Project Report for the Metro and tram corridor is ready for connecting the Vizag Steel Plant gate to Bhogapuram covering a 76.9 km stretch with 53 stations. The proposals have also made for the 60.2 km tram corridor, taking the entire length of the corridor to 137.1 km
The Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy said the upcoming metro project will change the entire landscape of the city with sustainable modes of transport systems. During a review meeting held yesterday, he directed the officials to start work on the construction of the Bhogapuram Airport, Beach Corridor Project. He also directed the concerned department officials for diversion of Godavari waters from Polavaram to Visakhapatnam through pipeline immediately and focus on the Metro project after these projects.
The existing beach road from Visakhapatnam to Bheemili and construction of beach road from Bheemili to Bhogapuram were also being discussed. Towards this initiative, the chief minister asked the officials to complete the land acquisition process for laying of the road. The officials said the preliminary cost estimate for the road from Bheemili to Bhogapuram, including land acquisition, would be around Rs 1,167 crore.
The Chief Minister asked them to consider the Beech Corridor Project as the first prioritized project and start the works on a war-footing mode. Special focus should be laid on the construction of Bhogapuram International airport, he added. Stating further, the chief minister said, the action plan for bringing Godavari water to Vizag is being prepared to meet the water needs of the city for the next 30 years and will be implemented on a priority basis.
