Been envying those photographs of cyclists in Europe in their cycling tracks with well-marked lanes? Not anymore because the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation is on the verge of developing a separate cycling track and pedestrian path at par with international standards on a 27 km beach front from Vuda park to Bheemili. This plan would encourage more people to take up cycling be it for recreational purposes or to commute to work. In the times of social distancing and cycling has taken off in a big way.
The proposed project aims to construct beautiful greenery along the stretch, coupled with separate walking and cycling tracks, benches on the sideways with drinking fountains, and public washrooms. Towards this end, GVMC already issued a request for proposal (RFP) to prepare a detailed project report for his move. The main component of the DPR will be the focus on integration and strategic approach for merging the green infrastructure with the existing roads, transit areas, bus stands, proposed metro stations, and residential areas. The strategic plan would focus on providing an ecosystem of bicycle track by creating off-road bicycle tracks and trails running along the beach at various identified stretches.
Speaking to Hello Vizag, Chief Engineer of the GVMC Mr. M Venkateswara Rao said that the initial estimates for the development of bicycle track, pedestrian pathways, and other works from (Vuda) Park to Bheemili is estimated to be about Rs. 112 crore and the financial assistance for the development of bicycle track, pedestrian pathways, and other works. The beautiful tourist spots like the lighthouse at Vuda Park, Tenneti Park, Sagar Nagar beach, Rushikonda beach, red sandhills, and other attractions or intermediate areas will be connected along with a 27 km stretch. Apart from offering an alternative mobility option, it is also expected to provide a recreational facility for cyclists, walkers, joggers, and beachgoers.
