Yes, we are talking about our own Vizag singing sensation girl Shankmukha Priya, creating ripples in the musical circuit of the country with her breathing taking performances. She is also winning hearts on the ongoing Indian Idol 12 with her unique style of singing, which has guaranteed her a slot in the top 15 of the reality show. A great fan of playback legend Kishore Kumar and also yodels like he used to.
Hailing from the musical family in Visakhapatnam, she learned singing from her mother who is a music teacher while her father plays Veena and Violin. Shanmukha Priya’s exceptionally strong musical sensibilities were acknowledged at the national platform in the ‘Little Champs’ music reality show on Zee Telugu at the age of 5 that pushed her into the limelight. Initially, her father was the first to spot her talent, it was her mother Ratnamala, also a trained singer, who was her main source of inspiration, something that Shanmukha has acknowledged time and again on national television.
Speaking to Hello Vizag, Shankmukha Priya said “she was first introduced to the vocal technique (Yodelling) at the age of 11. “Since childhood, I used to listen to Kishore Kumar’s songs but at the age of 11, I heard yodelling songs ‘Chala jaata hoon’ and ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhana’of Kishore Kumar” recalls the aspiring singer, now 17.
“In fact, yodelling is completely new to me and I was very attracted to that sound. I always wanted to try it, too. Times out of number, many people who said that yodelling can only be done by boys. So, I took it as a challenge and seriously started singing Kishore Kumar’s songs and slowly but steadily, I started breaking the pre-conceived misconception that boys can only make yodelling. A a matter of fact, I am indeed thankful to those who said girls can’t do it. I wouldn’t have taken it seriously otherwise,” she added.
For Shanmukha Priya’s father, Srinivas Kumar, who is a musician himself, happiness knows no bounds. He is feeling happy to see her daughter get into such a big platform to showcase her talent. The judges too are very impressed with her performance. During the spot selection, she bagged the golden mike twice. Shanmuka Priya shared that she is much excited about this new journey and it will remain a special experience for her.
Last but not the least, she wants to take up music as a profession but doesn’t want to give up education. I want to study BSc in mathematics. Math is my favourite subject. I love music and studies both,” said the teenager, who has sung Samjhe kya with popular singer Sonu Nigam.
